14.  VOICE TRAINING AND THHAT IN HINDUSTANI MUSIC

VOICE TRAINING:

This process of getting control over the musical notes is called 'Swara- Saadhana. In Indian music, it is called Swar-Saadhan and in Western Music, the technique of voice training is called Voice-Culture.

Hindustani Classical Music is based on Raagdari Sangeet. A Raga is a melodic scale, consisting of 7 (seven) Notes. The different combination of these 7 Swara's with various rules of permutation and the combination makes a "Raga".

Before learning a Raga the knowledge of Swar and Tala is very important because the correct position of the Swara (notes) in different Ragas can be recognized only after the practice of the 7 notes.

Practice and understanding of 7 Shuddha Swara is the first important part of Voice –Training in Hindustani Classical Music. It starts with the ability to sing the "Shuddha- Swaras" of an octave (from Sa to upper Sa). It is the same as the notes in the Major scale in Hindustani music.

Firstly in ascending (Aroh) and then in descending (Avroh) order and then gradually moving around them in all possible disorganized manners. Later, it starts with the learning to sing all the Komal [Flat], Tivra [Sharp], all the 12 notes of an octave. After a couple of years of Swar-Sadhana one should start learning Ragas in detail. The capability of seeing the correct positions of the notes (Swaras) and those Swaras in different Ragas can be recognized only after dedicated practice and discipline under a capable Teacher (Guru) and correct voice-training. Swara-Sadhana or voice-training in Hindustani Music differs from Gharana to Gharana. In Hindustani Classical Music, we have Gharanas (school of music), they have their own particular Voice-training and every Guru and each Gharana” has its own technique and method to train the voice and every voice has its own different quality.

THHAT:

Different Distributions of notes making different note structures are called Thhats. A thhat is a musical scale, conceived of as a Western musical scale can have, with the seven notes presented in their order of ascent (Aroha). These thhats are dependent upon the aroho of the raga. In Indian Classical Music there are 10 thhats from each of which many ragas are created.

 13.  OVERVIEW OF HINDUSTANI MUSIC AND NOTATIONS

The Hindustani system or Classical Music is based on Sapthaswaras. Hindustani style abounds in Gamaka (oscillating) usages, use of half Notes, and Nuances. Indian music is known for its complex use of microtones. But for notation and explanation, we divide an octave into 12 semitones as we do in the Western-style. We use a movable scale, an octave can start anywhere. The starting point is the root of an octave; all the other notes are defined in relation to the root. Each of the 12 notes in the octave has a unique identity, given by S, r, R, g, G, m, M, P, d, D, n, N.

Sa and Pa are fixed notes because they form a very powerful harmonic combination. The other notes are variable and can be sung in two different ways each - either natural (shuddha) or flat/sharp (Komal/ Teevra) in relation to the natural. So, there are only seven distinct note names in the chromatic scale - sa re ga ma pa dha ni. With the exception of sa and pa, all the other notes (re, ga, ma, dha, and ni) have two notation IDs each, one denoted by a small letter and one by a capital letter to distinguish between the two versions. Notice that the final sa is notated S', with an apostrophe after it. Notes in octaves below or above your basic octave are notated with apostrophes before or after them to show which octave they belong to.

Solmization is not just a form of voice training in the Hindustani tradition - it is also used now and again during the musical performance as one of the tools for improvisation. Singing in solfege is called singing in "Sargam," an acronym created by combining the first four sol-fa syllables (sa re ga ma). The full names of the notes (Shadja, Rishabha, Gandhara, Madhyama, Panchama, Dhaivata, and Nishaada) are used rarely. 

The Basic Seven-Note Scale

The chromatic scale comprises twelve notes separated by uniform intervals, but it is much easier to create pleasing melodies by combining notes separated by non-uniform intervals. Since ragas are so central to Indian classical music, always it shall be looked out for note combinations that offer significant melodic potential. There are about 500 ragas in the Hindustani tradition known now.

All new students of Hindustani classical music begin by learning the all-natural (all shuddha) seven-note scale comprising S R G m P D N as we begin with Major Scale in Western.

In Hindustani classical music, notating music for performance purposes is not practiced because a classical music artist is one who is capable of extemporaneous raga development, and classical music performance is an act of extemporaneous raga development. A notation is used to teach and learn music, and as an aid to memory. While learning a new raga, notation of a few basic melodic phrases, patterns, and simple compositions in that raga is done, so that the raga can be recalled later.

Notating the Composition

The actual notation of the composition begins by filling the melody and lyrics into the appropriate columns to indicate which syllable of lyric must be sung to which beat of the rhythm cycle. All the notes in a single box must be sung within the space of that one beat. Each line of notation comprises two rows. The top row can be the notes, and the bottom row can be lyrics or vice versa.  

Usually the refrain (1st stanza, called sthaayii) which is separated from the second stanza (called antaraa). Compositions in Hindustani classical music is structured to fit nicely into the grove of the rhythm. In addition, it is also important for a composition to make sure that the end of each stanza falls exactly at the point in the rhythm cycle from where the refrain can be picked up again. So, for instance, if the refrain begins on beat 9, every stanza will end on beat 8 so that a singer can pick up the refrain again on the next beat.

Melody Notation Symbols

Octave can be moved up or down so long as the positions of the notes relative to each other remain the same. Apart from the notes, there are a few other symbols that can be used in the notations.

  A hyphen (-) indicates smooth elongation of a vowel on the same note.

  A blank cell indicates a break (nothing to be sung) for the duration of the beat(s) in question.

  A colon (: ) indicates a half-beat break in the melody. This creates a syncopation effect.

  An exclamation mark (!) marks a sharp break in the melody, achieved by forceful enunciation of the preceding syllable.

  A divider line or vertical bar (|) marks the end of one line of lyric

  (The start and endpoints of the rhythm and melody lines do not usually coincide. Sometimes, their lengths are different too.)

  A comma (,) indicates a slight natural pause, or separates syllables in cases where one syllable ends in the same vowel that the next one begins with.

  Vowel sounds or nasals separated by periods (a.a.a / i.i.i / n.n.n, etc.) mark a gamak.

  (A gamak requires distinct enunciation of each instance of the vowel/nasal consonant in question).

Note that each line of melody/lyric is transcribed only once, and no information is provided about the repetition of a line or stanza. This is because there are no fixed rules for how many times a certain line or stanza should be repeated. That depends on the singer, the context, what sounds natural at that moment, and so on.


Romanized Transcription of Hindustani Lyrics

The traditional system of notation uses the Devanagari script, which is ideal because the lyrics of Hindustani music compositions are almost always in a dialect of Hindi. But with the globalization and digitization of Indian music, it is becoming more common to romanize for the sake of convenience.

An intuitive and somewhat simplified system for romanizing the lyrics is also followed for even those who do not know Hindi to be able to achieve a pronunciation as close to native speakers as possible without having to go through special training to understand the transcription code (those who know Hindi, of course, will have no problem guessing the words).

Even though the transcription code is mostly intuitive, the following characters may merit a brief explanation:

aa = open "a" sound (as in "car" and "bar");   a = closed "a" sound (as in "funny" and "run") or a schwa sound (as in "about" or "another");   i = "i" sound (as in "bit");   u = "u" sound (as in "put");  e = used for both the æ sound (as in "bat" and "cat") and an elongated "e" sound (somewhere between "bet" and "bait");    o = two kinds of "o" sounds (as in "horse" as well as "show");   d = a soft "d" sound;    D = a hard "d" sound;   dh = an aspirated "d";    Dh = an aspirated "D";     t = a soft "t" sound;    T = a hard "t" sound;   th = an aspirated "t";     Th = an aspirated "T"

The lyrics of the composition, in addition to being part of the notation table, are also written out separately under the title line. Sometimes it is necessary to provide a clear version of the lyrics separately because the words get distorted in notation, not to mention that the lack of spaces make it hard to tell where one word ends and another begins.

The Traditional Notation System

There have been many systems of notation in Hindustani classical music over the centuries, but a system proposed by musicologist Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (1860-1936) gained widespread acceptance during the early 20th century, and is commonly used to this day in music textbooks and other arenas within the Hindustani classical music community. The Bhatkhande system uses the Devanagari (Hindi) script for the notes and the lyrics, and a few other simple symbols.

The Bhatkhande system of notation

In this system, the top line states the name of the raga (Kedar), the type of composition (bandish), the rhythm cycle (Teentaal), and the tempo (drut). The sheet is divided vertically into four sections by drawing three vertical lines to represent the four sections of Teentaal, so that each line of lyric can be neatly fitted into a single row. For each line of the composition, there are three rows of notation. The first row notates the melody, the middle row contains the lyrics, and the last row provides rhythm markers.

The traditional system assumes that students are familiar with the basic rhythm patterns. Given the information that the composition is in Teentaal, one is expected to know that Teentaal comprises four sections of four beats each, and that the first beat of the third section of this cycle is muted. The rhythm markers in notation, therefore, are quite minimalist. In fact, they are "section markers" rather than "rhythm markers." Three types of section markers are used. A cross (x) indicates the first section. A small circle (o) denotes a section with a muted first-beat. If a section is neither the first section nor starts with a muted beat, it is simply denoted by the section number.

The melody is notated using the sol-fa syllables of the notes and a few other symbols. The sol-fa syllables of the notes are Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni (romanized from Devanagari). Flat versions of notes (not featured in this particular example) are shown by an underline. A sharp is denoted by a vertical line above the note. If a note belongs to the octave above or below the main octave, a dot is placed above or below the note. A hyphen indicates that the previous note is to be elongated. When two notes need to be sung within the space of a single beat, they are joined underneath by a curved line.

The lyrics are written in the middle row, syllable by syllable, to show what syllable must be sung to what note and at which beat. A symbol resembling a large "S" is used to indicate that a syllable must be elongated or sustained for the beat(s) in question.

The Bhatkhande system works well for those who notate music by hand in Devanagari, but it poses problems for those trying writing or sharing notations digitally for uniformity and the digitization of Indian music is still in its initial stage and there is a lot of experimentation going on. Until a new system suited for the digital medium, it is perfected and popularized and we may have no choice but to put up with this lack of uniformity. Most websites, however, provide at least a cursory explanation of their notation system.

Janaka ragas (Melakarta ragas)

Janaka ragas or Sampurna ragas are parent ragas from which more ragas are derived. Sampurna ragas as the name suggest are those in which all 7 swaras are present. They are also called Melakarta ragas. These ragas have all 7 swaras in their scales (only one of each swara, Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni), following strict ascending and descending scales, and are sung in all octaves. Example of melakartha ragas are Shankarabharana, Kalyani, Natabhairavi, Nattai, Harikambhoji etc.

72 Melakartha ragas (Mathematical computation)

There are different types of swara sthayis or note pitches that lead to the total number of melakartha ragas. These different variations of swaras lead to more than one combination of the musical scale. The different variations in swaras are mentioned below. Using this it is possible to mathematically ascertain the total number of melakartha ragas.
Sa (Shadja) - only one.
Ri (Rishabha) - Shuddha, Chathushruthi and Shatshruti Rishabha in increasing order of pitch.
Ga (Gandhara) - Shuddha, Sadharana, Antara Gandhara in increasing order of pitch.
Ma (Madhyama) - Shuddha, Prathi Madhyama in increasing order of pitch.
Pa(Panchama)- only one.
Dha (Dhaivatha) -Shuddha, Chathushruti, Shatshruthi Dhaivatha in increasing order of pitch.
Ni (Nishadha) -Shuddha, Kaishiki, Kakali Nishadha in increasing order of pitch.
However, there are only some combinations that are allowed as for instance Shatshruthi Ri can combine with Antara Gandhara and Chathushruti Rishabha can combine with Sadharana and Antara Gandhara only. Likewise, the same principle holds for Da and Ni. If we label these swaras as Sa, Ra, Ri, Ru, Ga, Gi, Gu, Ma, Mi, Pa, Dha, Dhi, Dhu, Na, Ni, Nu.
The total combinations are:
a) 1 Sa X Ra X 3(Ga, Gi, Gu) Ga + 1 Sa X Ru X 2 Ga (Gu, Gi) + 1 Sa X Ri X Gu = 6.
b) Ma, Mi =2
c) 1 Pa X Dha X 3 Ni (Na, Ni, Nu)+ 1 Pa X Dhu X 2 Ni (Nu, Ni)+ 1 Pa X Dhi X Ni =6
Multiplying these 3 combinations we get 72.

The 72 melakartha ragas are arranged in a cycle called katapayadi sutra which is named so because by the index of the raga we can get the name of the raga and the exact swara combination. The 36 melakartha ragas have shuddha madhyama whereas; the next 36 ragas have prathi madhyama.

The 72 combinations of melakartha ragas give rise to a huge variety of musical flavors. Any sampurna raga is present in this 72 melakartha cycle. From these 72 melakartha ragas, there are more than a thousand janya ragas that contain more beautiful musical notations. While getting to know the details of a raga, it is important to know which sampurna raga the janya raga is derived from in order to know the swara types.

Janya ragas

Janya ragas are ragas that are derived from Janaka ragas (Melakarta ragas). They may have less than 7 notes in their scales or have additional notes in them, zig-zag (vakra) notes that step and down, asymmetrical scales, etc. Example of janya ragas are bilahari and hamsadhwani (derived from shankarabharana), sriranjani, and darbar (derived from kharaharapriya), and so on.

Vakra ragas

Vakra ragas are janya ragas that have swaras arranged in a zig-zag manner. For example Raga Sri has the following arohanam and avarohanam: S R M P N S. S. N P M R G R S. Such a raga is called vakra raga.

Auḍava rāgas

Auḍava rāgas are janya ragas that have exactly five notes in ascending and descending scale (arohana and avarohana). Examples are:
1) Mohanam (S R G P D S. S. D P G R S)
2)Hamsadwani (S R G P N S. S. N P G R S)

Components of Carnatic raga

A Carnatic raga has several components - primordial sound (nāda), tonal system (swara), intervals (shruti), scale, ornaments (gamaka) and important tones (vadi and samvadi).

Nāda

An aim of composers and performers of the past and the present is to realize nāda, however, the sound that is audible to human ears is only a fraction of primordial sound.

Swara

The Carnatic tonal system consists of seven basic pitches, resembled by the solfa syllables: Sa (shadja), Ri (rishabha), Ga (gandhara), Ma (madhyama), Pa (panchama), Da (dhaivata) and Ni (nishadha).

Scale

A Carnatic raga consists of an ascending and descending scale pattern (known as aarohana and avarohana respectively). Both ascent and descent should have at least five tones, although rarer ragas contain fewer tones. Scales establish rules for all performers to adhere to in melodic performance, and provide a tonal boundary. Typical scale features also act to help listeners identify ragas.

Gamaka

Gamaka, or ornamentation, is essential in Carnatic raga performance. Gamaka encompasses controlled shaking, articulating, sliding, glottal stops and other vocal or instrumental manipulation.

The swara and scale define only the skeletal structure of a raga. The handling of Gamaka actually defines the raga.

Types

Improvisation in raga is the soul of Indian classical music- an essential aspect. "Manodharma sangeetham" or "kalpana sangeetham" ("music of imagination") as it is known in Carnatic music, embraces several varieties of improvisation.

Raga Alapana

An alapana, sometimes also called ragam, is the exposition of a raga or tone - a slow improvisation with no rhythm, where the raga acts as the basis of embellishment. In performing alapana, performers consider each raga as an object that has beginnings and endings and consists somehow of sequences of thought. The performer will explore the ragam and touch on its various nuances, singing in the lower octaves first, then gradually moving up to higher octaves while giving a hint of the song to be performed.

Niraval 

Niraval, usually performed by the more advanced performers, consists of singing one or two lines of a song repeatedly, but with a series of melodic improvised elaborations. The lines are then also played at different levels of speed which can include double speed, triple speed, quadruple speed, and even sextuple speed.

Kalpanaswaram

Kalpanaswaram, also known as swarakalpana, consists of improvising melodic and rhythmic passages using swaras (solfa syllables). Kalpanaswaras are sung to end on a particular swara in the raga of the melody and at a specific place (idam) in the tala cycle. Generally, the swaras are sung to end on the samam (the first beat of the rhythmical cycle), and can be sung at the same speed or double the speed of the melody that is being sung, though some artists sing triple-speed phrases too.

Tanam

Tanam is one of the most important forms of improvisation, and is integral to Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi. Originally developed for the veena, it consists of expanding the raga with syllables like tha, nam, thom, aa, nom, na, etc.

Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi

Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi is the principal long form in concerts, and is a composite form of improvisation. As the name suggests, it consists of raga alapana, tanam, and a pallavi line. Set to a slow-paced tala, the pallavi line is often composed by the performer. Through niraval, the performer manipulates the pallavi line in complex melodic and rhythmic ways. The niraval is followed by kalpanaswarams.

When learning a raga, it is never enough just to know the basic scale of the raga. In fact, different ragas can sometimes have the same scales. For example, the raga pairs Bhairavi and Manji, Mayamalavagowla and Nadanamakriya, Bilahari and Mand, Shankarabharanam and Kurinji, among others, have exactly the same scale, but are clearly distinct ragas due to the way the notes and musical phrases are rendered. In addition, the scale of the raga often does not offer insight into some of the subtleties of the raga, such as usage of gamakas, anya swaras, and ragabhavam. This is especially true for heavier ragas like Yadhukula Kambodhi, Thodi, Sahana, Huseni, Varali, etc.

The best way to learn a raga and account for all its subtleties, therefore, is to refer to compositions, which often contain a wealth of phrases that lend beauty to the raga. Before an artist attempts to sing a raga, he or she should be familiar with several compositions in that raga. He or she should have also listened to many different renderings of the raga by various artists, in order to get a better sense of how certain phrases can be applied.

Interesting Janya Ragas

Amr̥tavarṣiṇi is a rāgam that does not contain rishabham or dhaivatam. It is a symmetric pentatonic scale (audava-audava ragam) and it is believed to bring showers of rain.

 11. OVERVIEW OF CARNATIC MUSIC AND NOTATIONS

Sangeetham is an Indian term for Music. A group of musical sounds is called swaras that give melody and pleasant feelings to the ears, which is called Sangeetham. Ancient writers hold the view that vocal music, instrumental music, and dance together constituted sangeetham. Later, dance was separated from the first two.

Shruthi is a musical sound which a well trained human ear is capable of distinguishing. It is the Keynote or Adhara Shadjam; based on which all other Swaras are derived according to the raga.

Swaras: 

Swara is a musical note which is pleasing to the ears. There are seven basic swaras, known as Saptha Swaras. They are -

1. Shadjam (shortly - Sa)

2. Rishabham (Ri)

3. Ghandaram (Ga)

4. Madhyamam (Ma)

5. Panchamam (Pa)

6. Dhaivatham (Dha)

7. Nishadham (Ni)


Out of the seven swaras, Shadjam (Sa) and Panchamam (Pa) are constant. They are called Achala Swaras. The remaining five swaras change according to the raga and they are called Chala Swaras. In combination, both Achala and Chala swaras yield 12 different musical notes and they are called Dwadhasa Swarasthanas.

The Dwadasa Swarasthanas are -

1. Shadjam......................................Sa

2. Suddha Rishabam.......................Su Ri

3. Chatusruthi Rishabam.................Cha Ri

4. Sadharana Gandharam...............Sa Ga

5. Anthara Ghandaram...................An Ga

Rishabam, Gandharam, Daivatam and Nishabam allow three variation rather than two, depending on the adjacent swaras. So 4 more swaras shall be added to get 16 swaras called Suddha Vikrita Sthanas or Shodasa Swarasthanas.

Some basic Terminologies:

Arohana – Series of Swaras in the ascending order of pitch.

Avarohana – Series of swaras in the descending order of pitch.

Moorchana – Arohana, and Avarohana together, is called Moorchana

Sthayi – A series of swaras, beginning with Sa and ending with Ni, is called Sthayi.

There are Five Sthayis.

1. Anumandra Sthayi

2. Mandra Sthayi

3. Madhya Sthayi

4. Tara Sthayi

5. Ati-Tara Sthayi


The Sthayi in which we normally sing is the madhya sthayi. The swaras following the upper Shadjam of Madhya sthayi are in Tara Sthayi, and the swaras following upper shadjam of Tara sthayi are in Ati-Tara Sthayi. The Sthayi preceding Madhya sthayi is the Madhra sthayi, and the swaras preceding the Mandhra Stayi Shadjam are in Anumandra sthayi.

Purvanga – The group of first four swaras of the Saptha Swaras – Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma – is known as the Purvanga.

Uttharanga – The group of last three notes – Pa Dha Ni – is known as Uttharanga.

Dhathu – The swara part of the musical composition is known as Dhathu.

Mathu (Lyrics) – The sahitya part of a musical composition is known as Mathu.

Akshara Kala – Unit time in music is called Akshara Kala.

Thrikaala – Kala refers to the speed of the musical piece. There are Three Kalas,

1. Prathama Kala – First degree of speed. One note is sung in one Akshara Kala.

2. Dwitiya Kala – Second degree of speed, twice faster than Prathama Kala. Two notes are sung in one Akshara Kala.

3. Tritiya Kala – Third degree of speed, twice faster than Dwitiya Kala. Four notes are sung in one Akshara Kala.

Thourya Trikam - Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, and Dance, all the three combined together is referred to as Thouryathrikam.

Tala (/Thaalam) - Musical time or measure.

Avartha – It is the completion of a tala angas or time measure.

Lakshana of Sanchari Geetha

Geetha generally means a song. The union of Dhatu and Matu is known as Geetha, ie. The union of music and words (swara and sahitya) is said by the learned to constitute a Geetha. Geetha's are the simplest of melodies. The term Geetha literally means a song. But in music, it signifies a particular type of composition.

Geetha's are of two kinds. They are -

1. Samanya Geetha (Sanchari / Sadharana / Lakshya Geetha)

2. Lakshana Geetha

Samanya Geetha's (Sanchari Geethas) are usually in praise of God, Musical luminaries, and Acharyas.

In a Lakshana Geetha, Sahityam will describe the Lakshana of the Raga in which the Geetha is set to. There will be a small Deiva Stuthi too.
