20. FINDING THE RAGA or SCALE ON HEARING:
People who
have a passion for music and those who practice/ listen would generally
identity subtle differences in the mood of the song caused by the notes, which
is much admiring. Listening to music without actually learning the details will
be an added advantage. Good training or thorough listening of various compositions
and hints from people trained in music can help a person to start identifying
the raga or a scale.
Musical
instruments do not utter words, so the listener can concentrate and grasp the
raga or scale very accurately after repeated listening/playing to the notes of
the tune.
Every Raga or scale is based on a set of key ingredients called Swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni)
or Notes (C D E F G A B). This set of Swaras, has the "Aarohanam” (ascending
notes) and "Avarohanam" (descending notes). If you can relate the
notes of the song to the notes of the Raaga or Scale, the Raaga or Scale can be
found by playing the notes in the musical instrument or checking with the list
of Raga or Scales with the help of identified notes. It takes time, effort,
experience (Listening or Playing), and in-depth knowledge of the Raaga or Scale.
You may be able to identify similar songs based on the same Raaga and compare
the arrangements of Notes.
It will be
easier to identify raga or scale that was already learnt through practicing or
hearing a lot of compostions in a particular raga or scale.
